One Day in the Life on the Golden Eagle Oil Platform in the North Sea

Working on offshore oil platforms abroad is not only about stable employment and high salaries starting from $3,000+, but also about a completely unique lifestyle that is radically different from a regular office job. In this review, we take a detailed look at life and work aboard the modern Golden Eagle offshore production complex operated by CNOOC International.

This video provides a behind-the-scenes look at the daily routine, working processes, and living conditions of the international crew operating approximately 70 kilometers off the coast of Scotland.

Technical Specifications and Scale of the Complex

The Golden Eagle offshore oil production complex consists of two key platforms connected by a 70-meter bridge:

W Platform (Wellhead Platform)

This is where the wellheads are located, and where crude oil is extracted before being transferred via the bridge for further processing.

PUQ Platform (Production, Utilities and Quarters)

The main operational hub where oil processing, treatment, and export preparation take place. It also contains the residential accommodation modules for offshore personnel.

Production Capacity

The complex operates at full capacity, producing approximately 77,000 barrels of oil per day.

Personnel on Board

Typically, around 100 workers are permanently stationed offshore, while the accommodation block can host up to 140 personnel.

Main Departments and Crew Structure

All personnel aboard the Golden Eagle platform are divided into three major departments that work closely together:

Production Department

Operators responsible for managing the production process and continuously monitoring all critical systems and equipment.

Maintenance Department

Technicians and engineers who ensure the safe and uninterrupted operation of all platform systems.

Services and Catering Department

Stewards, cooks, laundry staff, and utility workers — the people who keep the entire installation functioning smoothly by cleaning cabins, preparing meals, and maintaining daily living conditions.

Work Schedule and Shift Rotation (24/7 Operations)

The platform operates around the clock. Offshore personnel work 12-hour shifts. Every morning at 6:00 AM, the day and night crews conduct a shift handover.

During the briefing, teams exchange safety reports, KPI updates, and discuss ongoing operational tasks. Afterward, the day shift coordinates directly with the onshore office to synchronize daily operations.

Living Conditions and Leisure On Board (Morale Booster)

Modern offshore platforms provide a solid balance between demanding physical work and quality recreation. Most employees follow a rotation schedule of 2 weeks offshore / 3 weeks onshore.

The platform offers excellent onboard facilities, including:

A modern 3D cinema

Snooker and billiards tables

Dart boards

One of the best offshore gyms in the North Sea

Private cabins equipped with satellite television (Sky TV)

Catering and Food Quality

The crew receives three restaurant-style meals per day tailored to different preferences and dietary needs. High-quality food in the dining area is considered one of the most important morale boosters after exhausting 12-hour shifts.

Psychological Challenges and Team Spirit

Offshore work is not suitable for everyone. Long periods away from family — especially during Christmas and New Year holidays — remain one of the biggest psychological challenges.

However, strong teamwork, mutual support, and camaraderie help employees overcome difficult situations. Offshore culture is built around one strict rule: any issue, whether it is a technical malfunction, fire emergency, or a colleague feeling unwell, must be addressed immediately and collectively.

Many offshore specialists have worked in the industry for more than 25 years and cannot imagine themselves in any other career.
